Abstract
1,210,052. Laser glass composition. OWENSILLINOIS Inc. 15 Jan., 1969 [15 Jan., 1968], No. 2367/69. Heading C1M. [Also in Divisions C4 and H1] A glass rod used as the active medium in a laser (see Division H1) is composed, in approximate mole percentages, of 45 to 75% SiO 2 , 15 to 35% Li 2 O, 0 to 30% CaO, 0À2 to 0À7% Nd 2 O 3 and 0 to 8% Al 2 O 3 . The total amount of Li 2 O and CaO is not substantially higher than 50%, and when the Li 2 O present is about 15% the amount of CaO is at least about 10%. When the CaO content is about 0% the amount of Li 2 O is at least about 24%. The glass composition may include 0À1 to 0À5% of CeO 2 , or less than half this quantity of CeO 2 may be used in conjunction with antimony or titanium provided as a solarization inhibiting agent. Examples of glass compositions are given in the Specification.
