Abstract
1334805 Laser glass OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 9 June 1971 19613/71 Heading C1M [Also in Divisions C4 and H1] A glass laser active medium consists of 45 to 75 mole per cent SiO 2 , 15 to 35 mole per cent Li 2 O, 0À1 to 2 mole per cent Nd 2 O 3 , and 0À5 to 30 mole per cent of one or more bivalent metal oxides RO from the group MgO, BeO, SrO and BaO, the combination of Li 2 O and the RO content not exceeding about 50 mole per cent. Up to 8 mole per cent of Al 2 O 3 may be incorporated, and the selected bivalent metal oxide RO may be mixed with CaO in an amount of at least 0À1 mole per cent. Other conditional proportions are that when Li 2 O is present at about 15 mole per cent the amount of RO is at least about 10 mole per cent, and that when Li 2 O is at least about 24 mole per cent the RO content is at least 0À5 mole per cent. A solarization inhibiting agent such as CeO 2 , antimony oxide or titanium dioxide may be used. Specific composition examples are given as follows, all ingredients being expressed in mole per cent: In each example the base glass so formed has 0À5 of Nd 2 O 3 and 0À16 of CeO 2 added, expressed in mole per cent of the base glass.
