Abstract

1,013,013. Gas scrubbers. A. OFFERGELD. June 1, 1962 [June 6, 1961; Aug. 25, 1961; Nov. 3, 1961; May 15, 1962], No. 21129/62. Heading B1R. Apparatus for contacting polluted gases and liquids comprises a chamber 2 of cross-section greater than that of the polluted gas feed conduit 1, longitudinally traversed by a rotatably mounted shaft 5 bearing perforated blades 4 which conform to the upper face of the chamber, said chamber containing about 50% by volume of scrubbing liquid 6 which liquid is projected in small drops upon the rapid rotation of the blades. The scrubbing liquid may be oil or water. The outside of the conduit and chamber may carry heat exchange vanes. A collector may be coupled to the chamber to recover any liquid expelled from the chamber by the initial thrust of the gases and to return this liquid to the chamber or a supplementary tank. The apparatus may be automatically operated by illustrated means (not shown) to stop the rotation of the shaft, drain the polluted liquid, refill with fresh liquid and restart the shaft rotation. An additional tank containing caustic material may be coupled to the automatic operating means allowing the caustic material to be mixed with fresh feed liquid. The chamber may be coupled to an additional large tank also containing the scrubbing liquid which is continuously mixed with the liquid in the chamber thus avoiding too rapid pollution of the scrubbing liquid. The inlet conduit may contain a suction fan and the outlet conduit 3 may contain a cartridge of catalytic or absorbent material.
