Abstract

An anti-polution device having a horizontal, cylindrical water filled housing connected to a pair of automotive exhaust pipes and to a pair of vertical cylindrical tubes each containing a filter medium and a propeller attached to a vertical rod passing into said filter medium. Each vertical cylindrical tube has a horizontal exhaust tube for expelling the remaining minute impurities. The exhaust fumes pass into the water filled housing and some of the impurities are removed. The partially cleaned exhaust fumes next pass into the filter medium of the vertical rods and are further cleansed. The propeller which is actuated by the air currents helps retain these fumes in the filter medium for a longer period of time before allowing same to pass out the exhaust tubes house causing greater cleansing of the fumes.

4 Claims, 5 Drawing; Figures ANTI-POLUTION DEVICE This invention relates generally to an anti-polution device, and more particularly to an anti-polution device which can be attached to the existing dual exhaust pipes of a motor vehicle and prevent the harmful particles of combustion from escaping into the atmosphere.
In the past, various types of devices have been developed to treat the exhaust fumes of motor vehicles so that the fumes of combustion would not be allowed to enter the atmosphere. Under certain meterological conditions, the exhaust gases of motor vehicles when discharged into the atmosphere combine therewith to form what is commonly known as smog. In large cities, where the smog has a tendency to accumulate, it has become a health hazard. None of the aforementioned devices have been found to be completely satisfactory. It has been found that to have a filter media which will do an adequate amount of filtering, the compaction and composition must be of a fairly compact nature. If
the filter media is not compact enough, the amount of impurities trapped therein becomes minute. If the filter media is compact pressure within the exhaust system of the internal combustion engine is not strong enough to force the exhaust gases through such a filter without the build-up of undesirable back pressures.
I the filter media 20. Integral with each tube 18 and set Therefore, a principal object of this invention is to provide an anti-polution device for connection with the exhaust system of a motor vehicle which will remove a substantial amount of the harmful elements found in the exhaust gases without interferring with engine performance.
Another object is the provision of an anti-polution device with a draft inducing means which forces the exdetailed description of the invention and from the appended claims and drawings set forth herein below, in which:
FIG. 1 is a side view of a motor vehicle showing a preferred form of the invention thereon;
FIG. 2 is a pictorial view of the first embodiment of the invention;
FIG. 3 is a sectional view in elevation taken along lines 3-3 of FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 is a top plan view as taken along lines 4 -4 of FIG. 3;
FIG. 5 is a partial side view of a motor vehicle showing another embodiment of the invention thereon.
Referring now more specifically to the drawings, the numeral 10 generally describes the anti-polution device which may be seen more specifically in FIGS. 2 through 4. The device 10 includes a pair of exhaust pipe Mounts 12, which mate with the dual exhaust pipes 14. These Mounts 12 are held securely in place by any known means, not shown, such as thumb screws, etc. Integral i in a position above the level of the filter media 20 is an exhaust pipe 30.
The embodiment shown in FIG. 5 illustrates a form which places the anti-polution device 10' in a position of less danger by being away from the highway level and the bumper area of the vehicle and also by placing the propellers 22' in a position of more air flow. A pair of goose neck shaped mounting means 12' and provided to serve this purpose.
In operation, the exhaust fumes forced out of the motor vehicle exhaust'pipes, passes through a water bath which removes all soluable impurities. The remaining impurities pass into the filter media contained in a pair of vertical tubes and are retained therein for a period of time during which a substantial portion of the non-soluable impurities are removed. The minute amount of impurities are passed out the exhaust pipes integral with the vertical tubes. The major force in retaining the gases for enough time in the filter media is accomplished by the action of the propeller which is air actuated and its associated vertical extension and the blades thereon which tend to'constantly mix the filter media and circulate the gases therein for more removal of impurities. See the arrows in FIG; 4
for the flow of the gases abovementioned. v
I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact detailsof construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
