Abstract
The process comprises reaction of 3-amino-4-phenoxy -5-sulphamoylbenzoic acid with 4-chlorobutyric chloride in dioxane at reflux temp. To increase efficiency, the subsequent pyrrolidone cyclising is carried out in reflux in alkali medium using potassium carbonate. - Then the carboxylic group is protected through formation of methyl ester, for redn. of the lactam carbonyl group with diborane, hydrolysis with sodium hydroxide and acidification with hydrochloric acid, to give diuretic cpd.
