7- (cyanomethylthio)acetamido -3- 2-(5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazolyl)- thiomethyl -DELTA3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid (I) is prepd. by reaction of cyanomethylmercapto acetic acid (II) with an easily hydrolysed ester of 7-amino-3 2-(5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazolyl)thiomethyl -DELTA3-cephe- m-4-carboxylic acid (III) and transformation of (III) into (I), using C1COOR' and (C2H5)3N followed by hydrolysis In the formulae R = an easily hydrolysed gp; rh is not defined, but butyl is exemplified. used in an antibacterial agent. The process is simple to carry out and gives good yields.
