Abstract
The process comprises reaction of 2,3-epoxy-(6-methoxy -2-naphthyl)-alkyl butyrate, of formula (I) in which R is C1-4 alkyl, with an alkaline alcoholate, at ambient temp. To increase efficiency, the reaction is followed by disproportionation of the product through heating at 140 deg.C, in a conc. soln. of NaOH. After extn. of the alcohol with xylene, the alkaline salt of the acid is acidified with inorganic acid.
