Abstract

A process is provided of preparing a diarylethane compound <IMAGE> where R' is H, methyl or ethyl, by reacting styrene compound <IMAGE> where R' is H, methyl or ethyl, with m- xylene in the presence of a catalyst having an acid content of more than 0.2 mmol/g due to acid sites with a Hammett's acidity function (Ho) of less than -7.5. The catalyst may be a calcined product comprising SiO2 and Al2O3. The diarylethane compound is produced selectively and in high yield.
