Abstract

Alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons are aralkylated by reaction with a styrene, which may contain nuclear alkyl or halogen substituents, in the presence of 0.7%-5% by weight based on the total reactants of an acid-treated montmorillonite type clay or a synthetic silica alumina, containing 7%-15% by weight of alumina, at 60 DEG C.-150 DEG C. with a mol ratio of alkyl aromatic to styrene of at least 1 : 1, e.g. 3-9 : 1. Suitable reactants are styrene, p-vinyl toluene and dichlorostyrene and toluene, cumene, cymene, xylene, ethylbenzene, diethylbenzene, butylbenzene, methylnaphthalene and trimethylnaphthalene.
