Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:A 2-iminothiazolidin-4-one derivative expressed by formulaI (R is phenyl having two substituent groups selected from the group consisting of alkoxyl groups and hydroxyl groups on the ring or a methylenedioxy group at the adjacent positions on the ring). EXAMPLE:5-(3,4-Diethoxyphenyl)-2-imino-thiazolidin-4-one. USE:Useful as a synthetic intermediate for thiazolidine-2,4-dione derivatives useful for diabetic cataract, neuropathy, retinopathy, etc. of men or mammals. PROCESS:A compound expressed by formula II (R<1> is H or lower alkyl) is reacted with thiourea under acidic conditions, e.g. acetic acid or hydrochloric acid, in a solvent, e.g. methanol or tetrahydrofuran, usually at 70-100 deg.C to give the compound expressed by formulaI.
