Abstract

A diesel engine (1) has a supercharger (3) and an injection pump (4) and certain minimum air and fuel quantities delivered by the supercharger (3) and the injection pump (4) correspond to the quantities required for a simple induction operation of the engine. The fuel quantity to be delivered by the injection pump (4) is related by a control device (11, 12) to the quantity of air delivered by the supercharger (3). The control device (11, 12) may be made inoperative in order to reduce the fuel quantity used under partial loads. Consequently. the engine (1) can be operated, according to choice or in accordance with operating conditions, e.g. load or engine temperature either with the minimum fuel quantity required for simple induction operation or with a fuel quantity related to the quantity of air supplied,
