Abstract
The present invention provides stabilization of a tall vessel with a passive system that is not based on the use of tanks having a natural period that is substantially the same as the natural oscillating period of the vessel to produce large neutralizing forces that dampen movement angle of the boat. Instead, deposits are used in order to reduce the time of straightening of the vessel as described in the following. According to the illustrated embodiments of the invention, water tanks are arranged on opposite sides of the longitudinal axis of symmetry of the vessel. The tanks are located below the waterline, preferably in the lower part of the hull of the vessel or close to it. The deposits have a shallow configuration with horizontal dimensions greater than the vertical dimensions. The lower portion of each deposit is substantially open to the sea to allow seawater to fill quickly and leave the deposits in short periods of time that are generally much shorter than the natural oscillatory movement period of the vessel. An open conduit interconnects the reservoirs to provide a continuous air passage between them. An air pump is coupled to the conduit to pressurize the reservoirs to a preselected pressure level to selectively control the water levels in the reservoirs during the oscillating movement of the waves. In operation, the water tanks are filled and emptied alternately in synchronism with the oscillating movement of the waves. For example, when the boat tends to swing clockwise about its central longitudinal axis, the tank on the right side of the boat will fill quickly through its lower large opening. The air is forced out of this reservoir through the conduit and into the reservoir on the left side of the vessel. The volume of air increased in the left tank quickly forces the water to leave it. When the boat tends to swing in a left-handed direction, the left tank is filled and the right tank is forced to empty under the force of air pressure in the system. The present invention acts to reduce the time of straightening of the vessel in a periodic sea. For example, when the boat tends to swing in one direction, the system reduces the tendency of the boat to revert to a vertical position. The reduction of the straightening moment prolongs the oscillation period of the vessel beyond the sea wave period. This in turn substantially reduces the amplitude of the balance.
