Abstract

An improved method for producing alloy steel powder intended for use in powder metallurgical processes that require increased hardenability, which includes the steps of: (a) establishing a steel alloy composition constituted essentially by weight per (1) more than about 0.10% carbon; (2) about 0.04% to 1.8% of at least one element selected from the group consisting of molybdenum, nickel, manganese and chromium; (3) about 0.01% to 0.10% silicon; and, (4) to the rest, of iron; (b) melting said alloy steel composition to form a steel alloy melt; (c) atomizing said molten mass of alloy steel to form a powder of atomized alloy steel; and (d) annealing said atomized steel powder to a carbon content in the range of about 0.10% to 0.70% carbon by weight based on said annealed powder, in an annealing furnace.
