Abstract

The aqueous degreasing solution of at least one degreasing stage is processed and then recycled into this stage. Between the degreasing stage and the phosphating stage there is at least one rinsing stage (Sp E), and the phosphating stage is followed by at least two rinsing stages (Sp P1 and Sp P2). In all the rinsing stages, water is used. The rinse water, in countercurrent to the workpiece flow, is passed cascade-like from rinsing stage Sp P2 to Sp P1 and from there to Sp E. The rinse water from Sp E is freed in a processing plant from troublesome dissolved anions and cations by the addition of precipitants and after separation of the sludge thus formed is recirculated at least into the rinsing stage Sp P2. Employing the method, phosphating can be carried out with a considerably reduced demand for fresh water, and very little waste water is produced. In addition the cost is saved of processing the cleaning baths which are usually discarded after 2-3 days.
