Abstract
In the prepn. of tanned fish skins (a) dry skins are treated with aq. soln. of neutral salt (I) at pH 1.5-3.5; (b) (i) the skins are tanned, (ii) washed at not more than 35 deg.C, (iii) then tanned again at not less than 35 deg.C using a more con. soln. than in tanning step (i); (c) the tanned skins are (i) washed, (ii) treated in aq. bath with anionic grease (II), then oil, then alkali metal salt (III) of weak organic acid, then alkali to raise pH to at least 6. Method affords high quality skins suitable for a wide variety of uses. (Provisional Basic previously advised in Week 8409)
