Improvements in transmission systems, of the kind comprising a multiple-ratio gearbox and clutch means, the gearbox input shaft being coupled to a drive machine through the clutch means and having the gearbox a selector lever by means of which the different gear ratios or gear ratios can be selected, as required, characterized in that the clutch means are operable to transmit only limited torque from the drive machine to the input shaft of the gearbox during a process of entering a gear, the torque being sufficient to allow the speeds of the parts to be engaged to be set to synchronous or almost synchronous speed, means being provided to detect the relative speed of the parts to be engaged in such a way that when the relative speed is close enough the gear can be entered.
