Abstract

In a suction hood 10 for an electric arc furnace and comprising a circular enclosure 11 having openings 17, 19 in its top and bottom walls 14, 15 for the passage of heating electrodes 18, a baffle 20 depending from the top wall 15 and surrounding a portion of the opening 17 is provided to ensure a substantially equal pressure drop across the entire area of the electrode openings and to define with the enclosure walls 14, 15 and 16 a duct 21 for collecting fumes and dust emitted by the furnace. A conduit 12 links the duct 21 with the intake of a dust collector and suction source. The side wall of the enclosure is provided with dilution air ports 22 having gates 23 for adjusting the flow of air into the collector duct 21. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the baffle (40) is constructed as a composite member so that its depth can be varied as required. The hood is supported from above by e.g. a roof ring and may have a sealing ring (50, Fig. 3) co-extensive with the side wall of the enclosure and movably attached thereto by means of chains (51).
