Abstract

A sealed flexible joint between a tubular member 14 and an electric cable 10 passing therethrough is made by shrinking a heatshrinkable sleeve 19 on both members and cable whilst trapping ring 20 of semi-thermoplastic sealant material between the sleeve 19 and the member 14. A sealed housing for electrical connections between cables 10 utilizes such joints between end caps 2b having tubular portions 14 through which cables 10 pass. In this embodiment the sealant material 22 coats the inner surface of the heat-shrinkable material 19, which may be integral with the end cap (Fig. 2, not shown), and may be stepped to provide portions (3, 3a) of different diameters for accommodating cables of different diameters. Annular cable cleats, such as 23 having inwardly-directed barbs 24, or comprising a plurality of metallic or metal coated plastics planar members flexibly connected together and provided with ribs (Fig. 11, not shown), may be provided on the cables so as to be sandwiched between the cables and the material 19. Barbs may also be provided on the tubes 14. Those heat-shrinkable members not used may be left capped (Fig. 2) The end caps are sealed to the sleeve 1b to produce either a breakable seal, in which case an elastomeric material 6b is compressed between end cap portion 4b and sleeve 1b by a clamp 7b, or a permanent seal, in which case a metal grid (Fig. 6, not shown) replaces the material 6b and is heated to cause sleeve 1b and portion 4b to flow together. In both cases a metallic back-up ring 5b preferably of aluminium, is used. Tie-rods 17 of plastics-coated metal are used to retain the two end caps in position although one end only of the sleeve may be used for cable entry, the other end of the sleeve being permanently sealed. The housing may be pressurized through a valve member (33, Fig. 1, not shown).
