Abstract

1487822 Cable joint cover WALTER ROSE KG 15 July 1976 [24 Sept 1975 12 June 1976] 29489/76 Heading H2E A cable joint cover comprises a metallic sleeve 1, a pair of plastics sleeve heads 5, 7 connected to respective ends of the sleeve, each sleeve head comprising a heat shrinkable cable inlet 6, 8 and a non-heat shrinkable connecting portion 11, 12. A heat-shrinkable plastics sheath 13 is provided over the sleeve and sleeve heads, and is optionally secured to the connecting portions 11, 12 by an adhesive 15. Metallic support rings 4, interlock with the sleeve 1 (Fig. 2). Optionally, the insides of the cable inlets 6, 8 have a layer of adhesive 14. The adhesive preferably liquifies at the shrinking temperature of inlets 6, 8. A valve 9 may be provided in the non heat-shrinkable part of the sleeve head for gas pressure-monitored cables. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the cable inlet (6a) has an inwardly directed tubular extension (16) which bears tightly against the cable together with a clamp (17) around the extension. The sleeve heads and the ends of the cables to be joined are prepared by roughening with emery paper and rubbing off with methylene chloride prior to shrinking on the sheath 13 or cable inlets respectively. The sleeve 1 may be formed from two or more parts.
