The invention comprises N-acyl derivatives of 5-amino - 1, 3,4-thiadazoles of general formula in which R is alkoxy, alkenyloxy, alkinyloxy, alkylsulphoxyl, alkylsulphonyl or in which R11 is hydroxyl, alkoxy, amino, alkylamino or arylamino optionally substituted by chlorine and/or nitro, and n is 1, 2 or 3 and R1 is alkyl or -NR111RIV in which R111 is hydrogen or alkyl and RIV is alkyl. They may be prepared by (a) reacting a compound of formula with (i) an isocyanate of formula BINGO, (ii) an acid anhydride of formula (R1CO) 2 0 or (iii) an acid halide of general formula R1COX, in which X is a halogen, in the presence of an acid binding agent or (b) by reacting a compound of formula in which Rx is methyl or phenyl at elevated temperature with an amine of formula HNR111RIV. The products may be used as herbicides either alone or in admixture with a solid or liquid diluent or carrier.
