Abstract
The invention comprises 3-aryl-1-alkyl-1-cyanomethylureas of the formula: <FORM:0863443/IV (b)/1> wherein each R represents hydrogen, halogen (including fluorine), C1-4 alkyl, C1-4 alkoxy, halogen-substituted methyl (e.g. trifluoromethyl), acetylamino, dimethylamino or nitro, R1 represents C1-4 alkyl and X represents hydrogen or C1-4 alkyl. The ureas are prepared by reacting an aromatic isocyanate the formula: <FORM:0863443/IV (b)/2> with an alkylaminoacetonitrile of the formula: R1-HN-CH2-CN preferably in a solvent at elevated temperatures, or by reacting an aromatic amine of the formula: <FORM:0863443/IV (b)/3> with an N-alkyl-N-cyanomethyl-carbamyl halide of the formula: Halogen-CO-N(R1)-CH2-CN in the presence of an acid acceptor.ALSO:A herbicidal composition comprises a 3-aryl-1 - alkyl - 1 - cyanomethyl urea of the formula <FORM:0863443/VI/1> wherein each R represents hydrogen, halogen (including fluorine), C1-4 alkoxy, halogen - substituted methyl (e.g. trifluoromethyl), acetylamino, dimethylamino or nitro, R1 represents C1-4 alkyl and X represents hydrogen or C1-4 alkyl, together with a diluent or carrier such as talc, fuller's earth or a solvent. The active ingredient may also be associated with a dispersing agent suitable for providing a composition which may be used as an aqueous spray.
