Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula: <FORM:0852422/IV(b)/1> in which X represents one to three chlorine atoms and wherein a methyl group may be present in conjunction with a chlorine atom and R is hydrogen or methyl. They are prepared by reacting an appropriately substituted phenyl isocyanate with O-methyl- or O:N-dimethylhydroxylamine. The compounds are used in herbicidal compositions (see Group VI). In an example a benzene solution of p-chlorophenyl isocyanate is mixed with a benzene solution of O:N-dimethyl-hydroxylamine, the mixture cooled and after standing, crystalline N-(p-chlorophenyl) -N1-(methoxy)-N1-(methyl)-urea is filtered off. The following substituted ureas are prepared similarly:- N-(p-chlorophenyl)-N1-(methoxy)-urea and N-(p-2:4:5-trichlorophenyl)- or -(3:4- or 2:4-dichlorophenyl)- or (4-chloro-2-methyl-phenyl)- or -(2- or 3-chlorophenyl)-N1-methoxy-N1-methyl-urea.ALSO:Compounds of formula: <FORM:0852422/VI/1> wherein X represents one to three chlorine atoms and wherein a methyl group may be present in conjunction with a methyl group and R is hydrogen or methyl (see Group IV(b)) are used in aqueous suspension as herbicidal compositions.
