Abstract

Foundry moulds are produced by adding to particulate materials coated with an alkali metal silicate from 10 to 100%, preferably 40-60%, by weight, based on the weight of the alkali metal silicate of a hardening agent selected from sodium formate or an hydroxide of an element of Group II of the Periodic Table or any combination thereof before or during the shaping operation, and hardening the finished article in the absence of added carbon dioxide. The preferred hardening agent is hydrated lime which is advantageously added in the form of an aqueous suspension. The hardening rate may be accelerated by adding a reducing agent, e.g. calcium silicide or ferrosilicon in an amount of less than 1% by weight. The alkali metal silicate may be sodium or potassium silicate preferably having a molar ratio of SiO 2 : Na 2 O(K 2 O) from 1.2:1 to 3.5:1, preferably 1.65:1 to 2.79:1. Refractory materials specified are silica, zircon, olivine, chromite, refractory grogs, crushed coke, carbon, graphite, silicon carbide, sillimanite, limestone, dolomite and chamotte. The hardening agents may also be used in conjunction with conventional hardeners such as dicalcium silicate, cements, basic slags and oxides and carbonates of elements of Group II of the Periodic Table.
