Abstract

A process for the manufacture of a yarn which can be used particularly for hosiery, wherein the yarn is subjected to twisting and untwisting operations, is characterised in that a synthetic material yarn is first twisted to a value ranging between one third and one quarter of its saturating twist, this twist is then fixed and the yarn is then partially untwisted leaving a final twist with the same direction as the initial twist which was imparted and ranging between 0.1 and 0.3 times the value of that initial twist. The initial twist is preferably fixed in the presence of saturated steam in a non- oxidising atmosphere, and is effected by a treatment including a slow rise in temperature, a stage at the maximum temperature, rapid cooling followed by a rapid rise in temperature and finally cooling to room temperature. The thermal treatment may be repeated several times. The yarn may be given an initial S- or Z-twist and two yarns may be doubled for use.
