Abstract

A cleansing composition stabilized against loss of chlorine contains as essential ingredients (a) an M-chloro-imide bleaching agent and (b) a stabilizer selected from sulphur-containing compounds. of the formul[mu] R-SH, R 1 S(=O)R 2 , and R 3 -S-S-R 4 wherein R is alkyl (C 4-12 ), phenyl or benzyl R 1 and R 2 are the same or different and are alkyl (combined carbon content C 2-14 ) and R 3 and R 4 are the same or different and represent alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, or alkaryl (combined carbon content C 4-14 ) the stabilizer being present in amount sufficient to stabilize the N-chloroimide against loss of chlorine. Examples employ the stabilizers octyl mercaptan, dodecyl mercaptan, benzyl mercaptan, diisopropyl disulphide, dimethyl sulphoxide, but numerous other stabilizers are specified. N- chloroimide bleaching agents specified are trichloroisocyanuric acid, dichloroisocyanuric acid, sodium dichloroisocyanurate and potassium dichloroisocyanurate. The N-chloro-imide bleaching agent stabilizer system may be utilized in admixture with conventional anionic detergents. Additional ingredients specified are abrasive materials: silica, feldspar, pumice, volcanic ash, diatomaceous earth, bentonite, talc builders: trisodium phosphate, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, sodium acid pyrophosphate, sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium monobasic phosphate, sodium dibasic phosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium silicates, sodium carbonate, sodium sulphate, borax, Na 3 NTA, Na 4 EDTA higher fatty acids: coconut or lauric monoethanolamide or iso-propanolamide hydrotropic solubilizing agents: xylene or toluene sulphonates organic solubilizing agents: ethanol, ethylene glycol and hexylene glycol carboxymethylcellulose and carboxyethylcellulose salts, cellulose sulphates, cellulose ethers and PVA sodium bromide isobornyl acetate dyes and phenolic antioxidants.
