Abstract
An anode for use in a mercury cathode cell for electrolysis of alkali metal halides, e.g. sodium chloride, comprises a titanium substrate which is mechanically cleaned, degreased and has anodically deposited thereon a coating of lead dioxide. The titanium substrate may be of plate, rod or mesh form. Mechanical cleaning may be effected by sand. blasting with silica sand, and degreased by immersion in an organic solvent, e.g. benzene. The lead dioxide coating may be deposited from a bath containing lead nitrate, copper nitrate and a sodium higher alkyl sulphate.
