Abstract
A continuous casting machine having trains of opposed pairs of guide rolls 12, 13, 14 and 15 below the mould 10 and a set of power-driven pinch rolls 16 is characterized in that at least one pair of the guide rolls is driven. The torque applied to each pair 20, 21 of the driven guide rolls is between 5 and 40% of the torque applied to the pinch rolls 16. The rolls 20, 21 are journalled in bearing chocks 35 slidably mounted in members 30. Two sets of back-up rolls 42 are journalled in fixtures 43 which are slidably mounted on a pair of studs 44 and have a pair of plungers 46 pivoted thereto. A leaf spring 48 abuts the ends of the plungers 46 and has screws 49 abutting its opposite face for adjustment of the pressure with which the backup rolls 42 bear against the roll 20. The spacing of the rolls 20 is controlled by the insertion of spacers 53 and 54 between stops 52 and a member 30. The rolls have right- and left-hand helical grooves 37 extending from their opposite ends toward the middle.
