Abstract
A mixture of a sodium silicate and sodium tripolyphosphate in the form of stable particles for use in a dry-mixed, built detergent formulation, which yield a pH of at least 10À5 in an aqueous 1% solution, is prepared by adding an aqueous solution of a sodium silicate having an SiO 2 : Na 2 O weight ratio below 2À40: 1 to a stirred bed of powdered sodium tripolyphosphate until the SiO 2 : sodium tripolyphosphate mole ratio is at least 1: 1 and a sticky mixture results from said addition, stirring the sticky mixture to form deformable, plastic granules, and heating and drying the plastic granules in a heating zone maintained at a temperature of 60 to 80 C. The aqueous sodium silicate may contain a surfactant and up to 10% of water (60% in total) to reduce its viscosity. It is preferably sprayed on to an agitated bed of the sodium tripolyphosphate at ambient temperatures. The mixture becomes sticky and agglomerates into granules, whereupon the temperature is raised to 60-80 C. and the granules are separated into the - 8 to + 50 mesh size.
