Abstract

A casting roll unit for producing glass strip from molten glass comprises a main carriage 9 mounted for translation across the front end of a glass tank supporting a series of tray rollers (see Fig. 2, not shown) an upper roller 5 driven by motor 56 and couplings 51, 52 and 53, and two alternative bottom rollers 6 mounted end to end in axial alignment on a sub-carriage 23 so that either roller may be stationed under the upper roller whilst the other is out of engagement, e.g. for replacement. Each bottom roller is driven by its own unit, e.g. the electric motor 30 driving belt 29 and gearing 26, 27, 28 via friction rollers 32 and 37 (see Fig. 2) on forward and rearward driving Shafts 31 and 36 which are journalled in pivotally mounted arms 35 (see Fig. 2) and 35a which are connected by lobes 39 and 39a and pins to couplings on the shafts of jacks 43 and 43a which are in turn pivoted to brackets on the carriage 23, the jacks being height-adjustable by means of a hand wheel 47. The bottom rollers may. incorporate cooling sheets 50 and, since they are supported only by the friction rollers on the drive shafts, they may be replaced by rollers of a different size.
