Be it known that ,WILLiAM.M. BACON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at thickness for printing impressions, in com- 'l bination with continuous feed mechanism for advancing the "work to the printing point, and mechanism fordischarging the. work 'from the printin point including also inking mechanism; all of said mechanisms being operated from a common source of power.
Another object of the invention is to provide a printing machine including printing mechanism comprising a pair of revoluble cylinders, one carrying the printing type and the other constituting a platen, with means for adjusting the s ace between said cylinders whereby materlal of different thickness is received at the printing point for printing Another object of the invention'is to provide in a printmg machme a Form of feedlng mechamsm whereby material of varymg p widths and thickness may be continuously advanced to the printing point for receiving printed impressions.

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings the machine comprises an open metal frame including corner standards 1 preferably composed of angle iron, said standards supporting a lower rectangular frame 2 and an upper frame 3. Approximately centrally disposed .and rising at the side of the frame are heavy standards 4 constructed preferably of I-beams.
The motor M for operating the machine is mounted on a standard 5 extending transversely of the Vmachine and carried by the side members of the lower frame 2.
Extending transversely and lying within the frame is a cylinder 6 supported upon a shaft 7 the shaft 7 being journaled at each end in movable bearings 8 slida'bly mounted in openings 9 in the web ofthe standards 4. The bearings 8 are raised and lowered by bearing adjusting mechanism of known construction which 1s operated by the hand rod 10. The cylinder 6 constitutes the platen .ipon which the Work is fed to receive printing impressions from the printing roller. As it is desirable to adapt the machine to receive material of various thickness and to adjust the ressure of the work against the prlnting cy inder, the machine has been arranged so that by thel operation of the hand rod 10 an extremely accurate adjustment of the shaft 7 may be effected.
The type cylinder 11 is carried on a shaft 12 which is journaled at each end in permanently adjusted bearings 13 mounted at the top of the standards 4. The axis of the shaft 12 is in parallel vertical alinement with the axis of the shaft 7 and since the shaft 7 is adjustable verticallyr the space between the proximate peripherles of the cylinders 6 and 11 may be `varied as'required for receiving the work at the printing point of varying thickness, so that regardless of the thickness of the work a 'uniform pressure is exerted thereon to effect the printing as it passes between said cylinders 6 and 11 at the printing point. The mechanismv -for rotating the cylinders 6 and 11 in synchror nism comprises a pinion 14 attached to the i drives a large gear wheel 16 which is fast yon an extended end of the shaft 7.
An intermediate pair of gearsA -are arranged in a movable bearing 17, said mevable bearing being supported at the junction of. links 18 and 19, the outer ends of which are respectively pivoted upon shafts 7 and 12. The pair of intermediate gears are mounted upon a. common shaft 20 which is revolubly mounted in the adjustable bearing 17. 'llhe pair of gears are in parallel vertical planes and the inner one 21 of said gears meshes with the large gear 16 and the outer one 22 of said pair of gears meshes with .a gear 23 which is mounted upon the link 19, the ,gear 23 in turn meshmg with and driving a gear 2t secured to an eXtension of the shaft 12. 'llhe gear' 24 has a releasable connection with the shaft 12 in the form of an adjustable cone clutch 25 of known construction. The gear .24 is. arranged so that it may ber'otated 1n adjusting operations without .rotating ,the shaft 12 and thereby the .cylinder 11, so that after the adjustment is e'ectcd the gear wheel may be locked'to the shaft 12. n
1t will be 'observed that the drive'connection whereby the shaft 12 is driven permits the elevation of the anisot the shaft 7 to be changed without throwing out of mesh the driving connection between the two cylinders. Obviously asfthe"l shaft7 is lowered the axes of the pair yof gears 21 and 22. are drawn inwardly, preserving the meshing engagement betweenthe'ge'ar 21 and the gear 16, the normal adjustment 'of the axes of the gears 22 and 23 and 4between the axes of the gear 23 and gear 24. By this arrangement it will be seen that the two cylinders 6 and 1l may be driven in synchronism regardless of the adjustment of the shaft 7 upon which the cylinder 6 is supported. v I
The mechanism for lfieeding the work to the printing point between the cylinders comprises an endless .belt or chain 26 which operates over alinedisprockets 27 and 28, said sprockets being carried respectively by shafts 29,and 30` journaled in lbearings 3l and 32 on the upper face of the frame 3. The shaft 29 is dlsposednearone end of the frame and the shaft 30 is arranged in parallel alinement therewith lbut near the printang cylinders. Thusthe' entire frame in which the rollers 34 are supported may be moved toward and away from the belt 26 so that the feeding mechanism is adapted to receive material of diderent widths. WVhen the adjustment has been eected the support' may be locked in osition by set screws 38, which lock the and) members 36 of the roller supporting frame with the bars 37. The rollers 34 are arranged in the same horizontal plane with the rollers 33 and have their axes inclined outwardly toward the right hand side of the machine at the same angle of inclination as the axes of the rollers 33.
At the outer side of the movable frame in which the rollers 34: are supported is avertically disposed guide strip 39 for guiding the edge of the work as it is fed by the feeding mechanism 'to the printing rollers. The belt 26 carries a number of adjustable lugs 10 which contact with the forward end of the flat sheets of work when the sa'me are placed upon the rollers 33 and 34, the lugs extending above the horizontal plane of' the upper surface of the two sets of rollers. As the work is moved forwardlyv by the inward movement of the belt', exerting pressure 'upon the front edge of the work through the 'lugs 40, the flat sheets are moved to the right hand side of the machine against the inner t'acev of the guide strip 39 supported is a guide plate 41 which'inclin'es upwardly at its inner end so that its inner edge will lie in the same horizontal plane with the periphery of the cylinder 6 at the printing point. 1n Fig. 4 this mechanism is clearly shown from which view it will be observed that a sheet S of the work, after it leaves the roller, is raised by the guide strip 41 to a horizontal plane coincident with-the lio space between the cylinders 6 and 11. The
guidestrip 11 has sufficient resiliency so that when 'the cylinder 6 is lowered the forward end of the strip will be depressed sufficiently to maintain they adjustment between the peint and the inner'edge of the guide strlp so that regardless of the adjustment of the cylinder 6, the work will always be presented in the proper horizontal plane to be received between the cylinders 6 and 11`at the printiug'point.

The shaft 44 carries a sprocket wheel 48, and the inner one ofthe shafts 30 carries a. sprocket wheel 49. A belt connection 50 operating over the sprockets 4S and 49 provides a power connection whereby the said shaft 30 is driven from the shaft 44, thus both the feeding mechanism and the discharge mechanism are operated together in thesame direction and at the same rate of travel.
The mechanism for inking the printing cylinder is located in front of the forward face pf the cylinder and comprises a pair of inking rollers 5l and 52, the roller 52 opera-ting in an ink trough 53. |The inking mechanism is driven through a chain of connections with the gear 24 comprising a pinion 54 mounted on a shaft 55 supported in brackets 56, the sprocket 54 in turn driving a sprocket chain 57 whichrotates a sprocket 5S secured to the roller shaft 59.
I am aware that the embodiment of the invention may be modified in various particulars without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. I do not limit myself therefore to the exact construction shown and described, but what l claim and desire to .secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a printing machine, the combination with printing mechanism comprising a printing cylinder and a platen, and inkmg mechanism for the printing cylinder, of a series of rollers for supporting the work during movement of the work in to the space between the printing cylinder and the platen, a Work actuating device for moving the work on said rollers to the printing cylinder and platen, and means fordriving said cylinder, said platen, said inking mechanism and said actuating devices from a common source of power.
2. In a printing machine, the combination with printing mechanism comprising a inking mechanism, means driven by said operating mechanism for operating the work atuating device to move the Work 0n said rollers between the printing cylinder and the platen, and. a guide for guiding the work properly toward the printing cylinder and the platen. v
3. In a printing machine, the combination with printing mechanism comprising the printing cylinder and a platen, and inking mechanism for said printing cylinder, of a series of work supporting/rollers whose axes are inclined relative to the axis of the printing cylinder, a Work actuating device, means for operating said printing mechanism, connections driven by said operating means for operating said work actuating device to carry the Work to the space between the printing cylinder and the platen, and a guide for guiding the work properly as the .Work is moved by said device.
4. In a printlng machine, the combination with printing mechanism comprising a printing cylinder and a platen, said printing cylinder and platen being arranged to receive the work therebetween', and inking mechanism for said printing cylinder, of-a series of rollers having their peripheries in the same horizontal plane and approximately in the same plane as the space between the printing cylinder and the platen, said rollers being arranged to guide the work toward one edge of the machine, a guide strip running vertically at one side of said rollers for guiding the workmoved thereagainst by the rollers, a continuously operating actuator for moving the work placed upon said rollers toward the interval between the printing cylinder and the platen, and means for driving said printing cylinder, said platen, said inking mechanism and said actuator from a common source of power.
5. In a printing machine, the combination with printing mechanism comprising a printing cylinder and. a platen, said printing cylinder and platen being arranged to receive the work therebetween. and inking mechanism for said printing cylinder, of a series of rollers having their peripheries in the same horizontal plane and approximately in the same plane as the space between the printing cylinder andthe platen, said rollers being arranged to guidethe work toward one edge of the machine, a guide strip running vertically at one side of said rollers for guiding the work moved thereagainst by the rollers, a continuously operating actuator for moving the work placed upon said rollers toward the interval between the printing cylinder and the platen, means for driving said printing cylinder, said platen, said inking mechanism and said actuator from a' common source of power, and a guide at the inner end of said series of rollers for raising the work as it leaves the rollers and directing it into the space between the printing cylinder and the platen.,

In a printing machine, the combination with printing mechanism comprising a printing cylinder and a platen, said printing cylinder and platen being arranged to receive the work therebetween, and inlring mechanism for said printing cylinder, of a series of rollers having their peripheries in the same horizontal plane and 4approximately in the same plane as the space between the printing cylinder and the platen, said rollers being arranged to guide the work toward one edge of the machine, a guide strip ruiming vertically at one side yof said rollers, for guiding the work moved thereagainst by the rollers, a continuously operating actuator for moving the Work placedl upon said rollers toward the interval between the printing cylinder. and the platen, means for driving -said printing cylinder, said platen, said inking mechanism and said actuator from a common source of power, a guide at the inner end of said series of rollers for raising the work as it leaves the rollers and directin it into the space between the printing cylinder and the platen, and a device for conveying the work from the machine after it has received printing impressions.

In a printing machine, the combination with printing mechanism, inking'mechanism for applying ink to the printing mechanism, and operating mechanism for operating the printng and inking mechanisms, of a series of rollers for supporting the work, a device for moving the work on said -rollers to the printing mechanism, and means actuated by said operating mechanism for operating said device to move the work to the printing mechanism.

In a printing machine, the combination with printing mechanism, of a series of rollers for supporting the work, a device for moving the work on said rollers to the printing mechanism, mechanism for operating said device to move the Work on said rollers to the printing mechanism, means for moving the work past the printing mechanism,
and operatin mechanism for operating the 'printing mec anism and said moving means, l 9. 1n a printing machine, the combination with a printing cylinder, a platen for cooperating With the printing cylinder to move the work during the printing operation, and an actuator for operating the printing cylinder and the platen, of a series of rollers for delivering the work to the space between the printing cylinder and the platen, and devices driven rby said actuator for moving the workon saidrollers.

In a printing machine, the combination with a printing cylinder, means for ap- Leaders plyingink to the printing-cylinder', and a platen coperating with the printing cylinder to move the work durin the printing operation, of a series of relatively revolu-ble rollers for supporting the work, a device for moving the work on said rollers to the space betweenthe printing cylinder and the platen, means for supporting said rollers in positions in which their axes are inclined relative to the axis of the printing cylinder, and an actuator for actuating the printing cylinder, the platemthe inkingfmeans and said device.

In a printing machine, the combination with a printing cylinder, means for applying ink to the printing cylinder, and a platen coperating with the printing cylinder to move the work during the printing operation, of a series of relatively revoluble rollers for supporting the work, a device for moving the work on said rollers to the space between the printing cylinder and the platen, means for supporting said rollers in positions in which their aXes are inclined relative to the aXis.of-the printing cylinder, an actuator for actuating the'printing cylinder, the platen, the inking meansand said device, and a guide for guiding the work as the work is being moved toward the printing cylinder and the platen by said device rollers.

In a printing machine, the combination with a printing cylinder, means for ap` plying ink to the printing cylinder, and a platen coperating with the printing cylinder to move the work during the printing operation, of a series of relatively revoluble rollers for supporting the work, a device for moving the work on said rollers to the space between the printing cylinder and the p aten, means for supporting said rollers in positions inl which Ktheir axes are inclined relative to the axis of the printing cylinder, an actuator for'actuating the printing cylinder, the platen, the inking means and said tionl with aprinting cylinder and a platen for coperating with the printing cylinder to move'the work during the printing operation, of a series of rollers for supporting the Work during movement of thework to position to -be engaged -by the printing cylinder and the platen, and mechanism for mov. ing the work on said rollers to position to be engaged by the printing cylinder and the platen.

In a printing machine, the combinat tion with a printing cylinder and a platen for cooperating with the printing cylinder to move the work during the printing 'operation, of a series of rollers for supporting the work, a device for moving the work on said 4rollers to position to be engaged by the naaolee printing cylinder and the platen, and means for conveying the Work from the machine after the printing operation is complete.

In a printing machine, the combination with a printing cylinder, and inking mechanism for applying ink to the printing cylinder`v ci a series of rollers for supporting the work during movement of the work into engagement with theprinting cylinder, and a Work actuator for moving the Work on said rollers into engagement with the printing cylinder. v

In a printing machine, the combination with a printing cylinder, and inling mechanism for applying ink to the printing cylinder,- of a series of rollers for supporting the Work'during movement of the Work into engagement with the printing cylinder, an actuator for moving the Work on the rollers toward the printing cylinder, and a device for conveying the work from the machine after the printing operation is completed.
17. ln a printing machine, the combination with a printing cylinder, of a series of vrollers for supportin the work during movement of the work into engagement with the printing cylinder, a device for conveying the work from the machine after the printing operation has beencompleted, and actuating mechanism for concurrently moving the work toward the printing cylinder and operating the printing cylinder and said conveying device. l y
