Abstract

352,003. Delivery apparatus for printing-machines. McCORMICK, R. R., 435, North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A. Jan. 2, 1930, No. 184. [Class 100 (i).] In a printing-press comprising a number of printing-units 1 .. 9, Fig. 1, either single or multicolour, relief or intaglio, arranged in a row, and movable folding-devices for operating on the printed web, the folding-devices are movable alongside the press into position to co-operate with any selected unit. Each printing-unit has associated therewith a vertical driving-shaft 36 having at its lower end a bevel-gear 35 engaging one of a pair of endwise movable gears 32, 33, Fig. 3, on a shaft 30 according to the desired direction of rotation. Movable along rails 18, 19 situated above the units 1 .. 9 are one or more frames 64 each carrying removable web-turning bars 78 .. 82 in tiers and rollers or bars 86, 87, 88 for reversing the webs before or after they pass to the bars. Feed-rollers 118, 119, Fig. 2, are provided at each side of the frame and are driven in either direction from a shaft 105 in the frame 64 having at its lower end a coupling member 106 adapted to engage a complementary member 39 on the upper end of one of the shafts 36. The member 106 is slidable on its shaft so as to be held out of engagement with the member 39 when desired by means of a set-screw. The frame 64 normally rests directly on the rails 18, 19 but it may be raised by means of eccentrically-mounted rollers 98 operated by handles 96 when it is to be moved along the rails to another position. A frame or frames 133, Fig. 1, mounted on the rails 18, 19 similarly to the frame 64 carries slitting-discs 149, 150 driven from one of the shafts 36 in a similar manner to the shaft 105. Two rollers 157, 158 serve to guide the parts of the slit web to different turning-bars on the frame 64. Each set of web-folders 59 is carried by a frame 47 movable along tracks 22, 23 situated in front of the printing- units 1 - . 9. Eccentric rollers 98 for raising and moving the frame 47 are provided as for the frames 33, 64. Drawing-rolls on the frame 47 are driven from a shaft 44 on the frame carrying a bevel-gear 43 adapted to be engaged with one of a number of bevel-gears 32 on a shaft 40 according to the position of the frame 47. An upward extension 60 of the frame carries rollers 61 for guiding the webs from the turning bars to the folders. The shaft 40 and also the shaft 30 are coupled to a shaft 52 driven from a motor 55. A number of driving- motors 55 are provided so that sets of units may be operated independently if desired. In operation, a web printed by one unit is guided over a drying- cylinder 12 and then may be guided to a second unit for perfecting or may be fed to the slitting or turning or folding mechanisms. If the web is slit, the turning and reversing bars in the frame 64 may be arranged to combine the two parts in various ways before folding.
