Abstract

A vehicle window comprises a glass sheet 18 having on one or both surfaces electric heater resistance bands 5 composed of a suspension of silver and a sintered substance in an organic binder deposited thereon in paste form, dried, and subsequently fired during a heat treatment for curving and/or tempering the glass. Current collector bands (6, Fig. 5) similarly deposited are connected to the feed circuit by a spring clip (40, Fig. 6) and lead (45). If the resistance of all or some of the deposited heater bands 5 is too high, at least a part of these bands are thickened by electro-deposition of copper. The parts not to be thickened are masked by a plate, or a protective readily removable varnish, or the shape and position of the cathodes are adjusted. The heater bands 5 are deposited by a silk-screen process, or the suspension is ejected under pressure from a syringe or gun 9, Fig. 8, in the form of a filament. The deposition apparatus, Fig. 8, comprises a frame 20 movable in the direction F along rails 22 on a table 19 on which the cold and cut-to-size glass sheet 18 is placed a carriage 23 slidable in the direction G on frame parts 24 a plurality of syringes or guns 9 (Fig. 7), one for each band 5, on the carriage and having a nozzle (12) for discharge of the paste. If the bands 5 are to be parallel curves, a single or plurality of curved templets 25 engageable with a wheel 27 on the carriage determines the path of the syringes and hence of the bands. If non-parallel curved bands are desired, each syringe is mounted on a pivoted arm 29 and has a wheel 30 travelling in an additional guide slot 26 corresponding to the path of the band. When the bands 5 are straight lines, frame 20 is driven at a uniform speed in direction F. When the bands are curved, frame 20 is driven by a constant speed chain 32 guided to follow a templet 33 of the same curvature as templet 25, a wheel 34 on the chain engaging a frame part 35. The heating conductors may define oblongs or squares, and may cross.
