Abstract

A container lifting frame has arms 16 for lifting "Freightliner" containers, which have bottom lifting lugs, in addition to twistlock members 29, Fig. 1, for engaging the top corner couplings of I.S.O. containers, and both sets of container engaging devices are movable to accommodate containers of different lengths. The container engaging means are mounted on slippers 7-10, Fig. 2, which are moved by rams 34, 35 working in tandem and are coupled together for equal and opposite movement by chains 47, 48 and sprockets 49. For I.S.O. containers the slippers are moved in steps equal to the full extension of one of the rams. Thus, either one or both rams are fully extended or both are fully retracted. For lifting "Freightliner" containers, the sliders bearing the arms 16 are moved in steps controlled by limit switches 101-110, Fig. 1, and a projection 111. Rams swing the arms 16 between operative and folded, shown chain dotted, Fig. 1, positions, and further rams move the arms into their container engaging positions. An hydraulic circuit is illustrated in Fig. 4 (not shown) and interlocks are provided, by means of limit switches, to prevent the sequence of operations proceeding before the previous movement is completed. Hydraulic fluid is supplied by a motor in a housing 53. Hydraulic locks operate in the event of a power failure. Limit switches ensure that the load engaging means cannot be disengaged whilst the weight of the load is on them. To lift larger containers a subframe may be connected to the twist lock members 28, the sub-frame having twist-locks which are mechanically operable by the main lifting frame.
