Abstract
1,2-Dichloroethane is produced continuously by feeding ethylene and chlorine via a circulating stream of 1,2-dichloroethane continuously and in substantially equimolar proportions to a reactor provided with a heat exchanger and distilling off the dichloroethane produced at a molar rate substantially equal to the molar rate of supply of chlorine, the surplus heat of reaction not used for the distillation being absorbed by the heat exchanger. The reaction may be carried out using an initial reaction mixture containing an inert organic solvent having a boiling point higher than that of dichloroethane. The operation of the heat exchanger, which may be disposed within the reactor or externally, may be regulated by a device operated by the level of liquid in the reactor.
