Abstract

A process for chlorinating hydrocarbons and/or partially chlorinated hydrocarbons containing up to 2 carbon atoms comprises reacting the hydrocarbon or chlorinated hydrocarbon in the presence or absence of catalysts with chlorine in a reactor in the liquid phase under conditions of turbulent flow, chlorine being introduced into the reaction system in the liquid state. Many embodiments are described including such features as feeding reactants at more than one point, mixing reactants before the reactor, dissolving reactants in recycled product before mixing, preheating reactants, recycling reactants and utilizing surplus heat to work heat engines. In examples, trichloroethylene is converted to pentachloroethane. Reference is also made to chlorination of acetylene to tetrachloroethane.
