Process for the production of 1,2 dichloroethane by direct chlorination of ethylene
It is known to produce 1,2-dichloroethane in such a way that ethylene is reacted with chlorine in liquid 1,2-dichloroethane that has been initially charged.
The focus of the various procedures is on solving the following problems:
1. Control of the exothermic chlorination reaction.
2. Achieving high yields
3. Economic work-up of the reaction mixture.
The known processes work at normal pressure and temperatures from 20 to 70ob. The heat of reaction is dissipated directly or indirectly by cooling devices installed inside or outside the reactor. Otherwise, the various methods differ in the way in which the reaction partners are brought together. So once chlorine is dissolved in dichloroethane u. by countercurrent flow of this solution to the ethylene converted into the reaction product, or another time the ethylene is absorbed in dichloroethane under pressure and, after releasing the pressure, the chlorine is brought together with this solution. According to other methods, the reactants are mixed with one another in a gaseous state and passed into the initially charged liquid dichloroethane.
The reaction product formed is withdrawn in liquid form from the reactor and subjected to a lye and water washing, a distillative drying and a purifying distillation to remove undesired impurities such as iron chloride, hydrogen chloride, chlorine and more highly chlorinated hydrocarbons. The corrosion and wastewater problems that occur as well as the loss of sealing chloroethane are known.
According to another method, the reaction is carried out at the boiling point of the product, the exothermic heat of formation being consumed by evaporation of the reaction product. Since the heat of reaction is about 6.5 times greater than the heat of vaporization of dichloroethane, an amount of dichloroethane evaporates in the reactor which is greater than the amount of the reactants supplied. For this reason, after the condensation of the evaporated product, only part of it is drawn off and fed to the final work-up, while a large part of the condensate is returned to the reactor for evaporative cooling. When large amounts of vapor emerge, considerable amounts of unreacted chlorine and ethylene also escape from the reactor.
Since the solubility of chlorine is significantly higher than that of ethylene, the condensate return flow increases the supply of chlorine in the reactor, while the ethylene is discharged from the process. Apart from the fact that the ethylene losses make the process inefficient, these special reaction conditions inevitably lead to increased substitution reactions by chlorine and thus to the formation of hydrogen chloride and more highly chlorinated products.
The object of the invention is to design the continuous production of 1,2-dichloroethane in such a way that the starting materials are converted practically quantitatively into the desired end product, so that both the conversion, especially with regard to ethylene, and the yield are as high as possible. The process according to the invention is therefore also intended to result in particular side reactions, e.g. lead to more highly chlorinated hydrocarbons and to hydrogen chloride, should be avoided, and a high-quality, pure product should be obtained with as little equipment as possible.
The invention therefore relates to a process for the production of 1,2-dichloroethane by adding chlorine to ethylene in the initially charged boiling reaction mixture containing iron chloride and optionally solvent, mainly consisting of the end product, which is characterized in that the boiling reaction mixture in the reactor is circulated via a pump, equimolecular amounts of chlorine and ethylene are mixed with the circulating reaction mixture by injection into the pressure line of the pump and reacted in the reactor, and the resulting heat of reaction is partly used for the distillation of the end product and partly through Cooling is removed, the amount of end product distilled per unit of time being equal to the total amount of ethylene and chlorine supplied per unit of time.
The procedure for carrying out the process is preferably as follows: The boiling reaction mixture in the reactor, which consists mainly of 1,2-dichloroethane, is circulated via a pump. In the pressure line of the pump, ethylene and chlorine are injected into the liquid in equimolecular quantities. After the reactants have entered the reactor, the addition reaction takes place. The resulting heat of formation is partially used for evaporation or distillation of the end product.
The remaining heat is dissipated by heat exchangers in or outside of the reactor. The ratio of the heat used for the distillation to the heat dissipated by the cooler is measured in such a way that just as much of the end product is distilled per unit of time as was created by the addition of chlorine to ethylene. The amount evaporated therefore practically corresponds to the amount of chlorine and ethylene added.
The process can also be carried out in such a way that the reaction mixture additionally contains an inert, higher-boiling, organic solvent.
The invention is explained in more detail below with reference to the drawing in which the flow diagram of an example method is shown:
The reaction mixture boiling in reactor 2, which for the most part consisted of 192-dichloroethane, was circulated by circulating pump 1. Through line 3 725 kg / h of gaseous chlorine and through line 4 287 kg / h of ethylene with a degree of purity of 99 total% were injected into the pressure line of the pump. When entering the reactor, the reactants were practically mixed. The heat generated by the reaction was partly dissipated via the heat exchanger 5. The remaining part was used as heat of vaporization for the distillation of the product.
The distillation rate was adjusted by regulating the cooling system 6 so that the amount of end product evaporating per unit of time was equal to the amount of starting products supplied per unit of time, i.e. the liquid level remained practically constant. The regulator was controlled by the level of the liquid reaction mixture in the reactor. Due to the slight corrosion of the steel equipment, the liquid contained small amounts of iron chloride, which suppressed substitution reactions, in particular the formation of trichloroethane.
The vapor mixture leaving overhead was liquefied in the condenser 7, cooled to approx. 60 ° C. and collected in the liquid separator 6. The amount of 1,2-dichloroethane escaping with the residual gases was 28 kg / h. However, this was largely condensed by cooling the residual gas in the condenser 9 to -20 to 250C and fed back into the liquid separator 8. There was an hourly amount of liquid of around 1,000 kg, which had the following composition:
1,2-dichloroethane 99.5% by weight
1,1,2-trichloroethane 0.3% by weight
1,1-dichloroethane 26 ppm
Chloroform 20 ppm 1-bromo-2-chloro-ethane 390 ppm ethyl chloride 1145 ppm
Vinyl chloride 2 ppm ethylene 340 ppm higher boiling component 77 ppm
This corresponds to a total yield, based on the ethylene used, of 98.3% of theory. The residual amount leaving the plant every hour was 12 kg.
It had the following composition:
1,2-dichloroethane 3.0% by weight
C2H4 12.4% by weight
Cl2 1.7 wt% HCl 8.4 wt%
Inert 74.5 wt%
