Abstract
A metal extrusion press has a series of containers 39a, 39b, 39c mounted on aturntable 32 which moves them successively to a cleaning and residue removing station B, billet loading station C and extruding station A. The extruding ram 7 is mounted on a crosshead 5 and driven by a cylinder assembly 2 connected by tie rods 3 to a backing frame 1. The ram 7 may be hollow so that a mandrel 21a, 21b can be passed through when the press is used to extrude tubes. The mandrels are mounted in a carrier 12 which is eccentrically journalled in the assembly 2 so that one mandrel is allowed to cool every alternate cycle. The extruding dies 29a, (29b), Fig. 2 (not shown), are mounted on a plate 23 which is intermittently rotated by an electric motor 26 to align one of the dies with the extrusion axis. A saw (31a) is advanced by a piston-cylinder assembly (31) to cut the extruded stock from the residue. The containers 39a, 39b, 39c are each mounted in a holder 37, 38 which has a cylinder 40 to move the container axially against the die before the extrusion. A roller conveyer 43 is fixed to the frame 1 and co-operates with roller conveyers 42a, 42b, 42c to support the extruded work. At station B the residue is removed by a plunger plate 47 and the walls of the container cleaned by brushes 47a. The container holders may be rotated during the cleaning and aligned parallel to the extrusion axis. After each extrusion the turntable is indexed 120 degrees so that the cleaned container can be loaded with a billet 53 and a pusher disc 54 at station C. The billet may be hollow and the disc annular when tubes are being extruded. At station A, after extrusion the residue is frictionally held in the container and retraction of the container 39a pulls the die 29a from the plate and the die is ejected from the press with the residue and the pusher disc 54. Alternatively the residue may be removed by the ram 7 and the station B used solely to clean the container. The turntable is preferably horizontal although it may be slightly inclined. Further the container may be cleaned and loaded at one station from opposite sides. In an alternate embodiment, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), five containers (66a), (66b), (66c), (66d), (66e), are secured to the turntable (60) and four preparatory stations (B), (C), (D), (E) arranged around the turntable. Stations (B), (C) remove the residue and clean the containers respectively and stations (D), (E) load the container and pierce the billet respectively. The container holders are pivoted by rack and pinion (64), (64a) to turn the container to the vertical at station (D) so that the billet can be loaded by a carrier (79). A piercing press (82), Fig. 6 (not shown), is provided at station (E) and has a stem (83) with a mandrel (84) and a back-up bar (85) for the container. A stem (86) is provided in the bar (85) to close the base of the container.
