Abstract

A method of electro-plating an object at least the surface of which consists of U, Pu, U-base alloy or Pu-base alloy (e.g. a rod or plate intended to serve as nuclear fuel) comprises the successive steps of electro-depositing a layer of a metal (e.g. Ni or Cu) which adheres to the surface of the object electro-depositing at least one layer of Sn, Zn, Pb or In mechanically surface flattening the surface whereby the pores and/or surface irregularities are closed, a smooth outer surface is obtained and the Sn, Zn, Pb or In is rendered impervious to outside agents, the total thickness of the plating after flattening being greater than 55 microns. In an example a plate of U-base alloy is (a) degreased and pickled by degreasing with trichloroethylene, electrolytic degreasing in a solution containing a wetting agent and 40 g/1 NaOH at 5 to 10 A/dm , pickling with HNO 3 , HCl and then HNO 3 (b) electrolytically plated with 40 to 50 microns of Ni by electrically connecting it as a negative pole followed by dipping it in a bath containing nickel sulphate and chloride and KA1(SO 4 ) 2 . 12H 2 O at 45 C. and at a pH of 3 0À25, the current density being progressively increased to 2À5 A/dm2 (c) washed, dried weighed, thickness measured and surface irregularities removed (d) heat-treated to enhance the adhesion of the Ni (e) retouched to fill in any flaws in the Ni layer by electrolytic "spot" deposition of Ni or Sn (f) prepared for Sn plating by electrolytic degreasing in an alkaline bath (g) electrolytically plated with 40 microns of Sn by dipping it at low voltage in a bath containing Na 2 SnO 3 .3H 2 O and NaOH at 70 degrees and increasing the current density to 2À5A/dm2 (h) washed, dried, surface irregularities removed by electrolytic spot deposition of Sn followed by buffing or polishing and (i) mechanically flattened by rotary brushing, the brush may contain a fine grit abrasive.
