Abstract

Dummy shuttle, Fig. 9. A double-acting dummy shuttle has beaks 8, 9 and pegs 11, 12 disposed in a recess in the front of the shuttle body the recess is continued to the ends of the body by grooves 3 to accommodate a thread guiding, eyelet which presents weft to a beak as the shuttle is being picked, the weft the running on the peg 11 or 12. Metal plates 13, 14 mounted in the bottom of the shuttle generate signals as they pass a coil on the slay the plates may be flush with the bottom or may be within the thickness of the bottom so as not to show. Operation, Fig. 2. At the stage shown, an eyelet 5 places the weft 25 in the path of the shuttle 2 which takes a loop into the shed, the weft being still attached to the last-but-one pick (which was inserted from this end of the loom). When the shuttle passes the coil on the slay, it triggers a cutter 22 which cuts the weft inwards of the edge of the warp (not shown), thereby producing a tucked-in selvedge at the same time the weft coming from the supply is clamped, so that continued movement of the shuttle straightens the weft out into a single pick. During beat-up, the eyelets moves forward with the slay (as shown at 4) to take up slacken between the clamp and the selvedge and so tauten the pick. Weft cutter, Fig. 13. Each cutter 21, 22 consists of a plate 33 having a notch 48 to receive the weft 28 which is cut by downward movement of a blade 49 operated by an electromagnet, the armature of which consists of a horizontally-disposed leaf spring terminating in a pin 51 engaged in a hole in the blade 49. The cutter assembly pivots on the temple housing 38 and is swung upwards out of the shed when struck by the slay during beat up. Weft clamp, Fig. 16. Eaoh weft clamp consists of a curved brake shoe 56, across which the weft 25 runs and against which it can be pressed by a metal band 57 attached to a stirrup 60. The clamp is released by a striker 64 on the slay during beat up, whereupon the stirrup 60 snaps past the armature 66 of an electromagnet 68. Energisation of the magnet as the shuttle passes the coil on the slay releases the stirrup, which is operated to clamp the weft by a spring (not shown).
