5 Claims. (Cl. 139-196) This invention relates to shuttles for use in automatic looms and, in particular, to shuttles for use in looms employing an impact type thread cutter or parter for severing the filling yarn.
It is a general object of this invention to provide a shuttle having a plate in the front wall of the shuttle to coact with a cutter to sever the weft or filling thread wherein the plate may be quickly and easily fitted into a groove or recess in the front wall of the shuttle and held therein without the use of any adhesives and Without the use of any retaining elements which pass through the plate. Adhesive may be used, if desired, merely to eliminate play or prevent lateral movement of the plate Within its recess.
It is a further object to provide a shuttle having a thread plate contained in a recess in the front wall of the shuttle in such a manner that there is no danger of the plate or its retaining element working loose.
It is a further object to provide a shuttie having a thread plate retained therein by means of an undercutin the front wall of the shuttle acting upon one end of the plate and by means of a pin inserted vertically into said wall forwardly of a lip extension on said plate at its other end.
It is a further object to provide a shuttle having a thread plate which may be mounted on the shuttle at a minimum expense and which may be readily replaced if need be.
Further objects and advantages will appear from the description to follow.
In certain types of weft replenishing looms there is a thread which extends from the selvage to the bobbin contained within the shuttle, which, if not cut and removed at time of transfer of bobbins, may be whipped hack into the shed to form an imperfection in the woven fabric. One form of thread parter used to cut this thread employs a plate carried in the front Wall of the shuttle adjacent the side delivery eye in the horizontal path of travel of the weft thread along the shuttle. This plate has been held in place, according to devices of the prior art, by means of screws, rivets, adhesives, superposed shells of hardened material, or combinations thereof.
According to the invention, a recess is provided in the front wall of the shuttle adjacent the side delivery eye, a portion of the recess forming an undercut at one end with respect to the forward surface of the front wall. One end of the thread plate is inserted into the undercut and held thereby. The opposite end of the plate has a stepped lip extension which fits into a cut-out which communicates with the recess and extends rearwardly thereof. A retaining pin is inserted vertically into the front wall of the shuttle immediately in front of the stepped extension to prevent release of the plate.

In the drawings a shuttle is shown at 11 having a shuttle eye or block 12 of known construction adjacent one end thereof held in place by retaining means 13. A filling bobbin or carrier 14 normally feeds a yarn y into the shuttle block and out through a side delivery eye or opening 14'. A thread cutter plate preferably of hardened metal 15 is inserted into a recess 16 in the front wall 17 of the shuttle adjacent the side eye and to its left so that as the shuttle approaches transfer position at the right side of the loom, the filling yarn will extend across the thread plate.
The recess forms an undercut as shown at 18 with a forward portion of the front wall and may be substantially rectangular in shape although not necessarily so. At its opposite end the recess is further cut back in part as indicated at 19. The cutter plate 15 has a shape conforming with the recess in the block and includes a stepped lip extension 20.
The plate is assembled to the shuttle by first inserting one end thereof into the undercut 18 and then pressing the stepped extension 20 into the cut back portion 19. A pin 21 is then forced into a hole 22 drilled vertically either all the way or only part way through the front wall just forward of the extension but rearwardly of the major portion or cutting face of the plate so that it could not possibly interfere with feeding of yarn or with operation of the cutter blade (not shown). If desired, the plate may readily be removed merely by removal of pin 21.
While the invention may be applied to any type of shuttle, it has particular application to plastic shuttles.
While one embodiment of the invention has been disclosed, it is to be understood that the inventive concept may be carried out in a number of ways. This invention is, therefore, not to be limited to the precise details described, but is intended to embrace all variations and modifications thereof falling within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. In a shuttle having a front wall and a side delivery eye therein adapted to feed a filling yarn in a horizontal path along said wall, means for coopearting with an impact type thread parter for severing said yarn which comprises a plate of relatively hard material set within a recess in said front wall and held therein by means of an undercut in said wall at one end and by a pin inserted vertically into said wall and forwardly of said plate at its other end.

In a shuttle having a front wall and a side delivery eye therein adapted to feed a filling yarn in a horizontal path along said wall, means for cooperating with an impact type thread parter for severing said yarn which comprises a plate of relatively hard material set Within a recess in said front wall and held therein by means of an undercut in said wall at one end and by a pin inserted vertically into said wall and forwardly of a stepped lip extension on said plate at its other end.
