Abstract

A container engaging device as described in Specification 1,144,987 is mounted on the lift carriage 14 of a fork lift truck by means of a pair of rearwardly extending hook shaped frameworks 92 and has bearing members 120, 122, 124 interposed therebetween to enable an hydraulic or pneumatic ram 186 to slide said container engaging device transverse to the carriage and the mast. The bearing members are respectively mounted on the lower and forward facing surfaces 98, 100 of the hook frameworks 92 and on the rearward facing surface 88 of a vertical girder 91 forming part of the framework 28 of the article engaging surface. Each bearing member comprises a pair of plates 130, 132 spaced apart by a web 134 and rods 138 and an endless roller chain 140 circulating about a boss 142 between the plates 130, 132. The web 134 mounts a projection 136 to engage a recess 128 formed in the framework 92 or the girder 91 to provide a form of universal coupling. The bearing members have chains 144 by means of which they are secured to the framework 92 or girder 91 between guideways 148 to prevent excess movement thereof away from their proposed path. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), the bearing member (120) has a fabricated female member (166) having a collar (172) to retain, by means of a shoulder (164), a projection (162) extending from the support members. The modification requires no chains (144). In a further embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown) the roller chain is replaced by a block of antifriction material 176 e.g. p.t.f.e. or nylon.
