Abstract
An underpass or bridge for intersecting routes 1, 2 comprises a thin shell arch 4 of reinforced concrete which is either cast in situ or formed of interconnected flat or curved slabs 5 and is covered by a shallow overfill 3 which may be banked to a slope as steep as 1:1, the maximum concrete thickness and maximum crown overfill thickness being specified in relation to the arch radius. For a cylindrical shell the concrete and overfill thicknesses are respectively less than 1/30th and less than 1/10th of the arch radius for a non- cylindrical shell the two thicknesses are respectively less than 1/40 and less than 1 /20Lh of the maximum arch radius. The shell 4 may be supported on triangular strip foundations, Fig. 5 (not shown) or on beam and pile foundations. In a modification the underpass comprises twin arches and a central support wall. A preferred curve for the arch. Fig. 3 (not shown) comprises a central large-radius circular arc merging on each side with transition curves of progressively reducing radius.
