Abstract

A process for forming a stable twisted thread assembly, comprises individually twisting at least one strand of a group of strands so that each twisted strand has repeated along its length successive zones of opposite twist separated by strand twist changeover regions at which there is no twist, converging the strands of the group so that they twist around one another such as to form a stable first thread having successive zones of opposite plying twist separated by plying twist change-over regions at which there is no plying twist, twisting said first thread to superimpose alternately opposite twist in successive zones along its length which latter zones are separated by superimposed twist change-over regions! of no superimposed twist, and converging the twisted first thread with a second thread so that the two threads twist around one another to form a stable twisted assembly. The second thread, before it is converged with the first thread, may be twisted such as to impart alternately opposite twists to successive zones along its length which latter zones are separated by change-over regions of no imparted twist, and in addition may comprise strands twisted similarly to the strands of the first thread. The strands and threads may be twisted by two pair of rollers axially reciprocated as in Specification No. 1,121,942 with the rollers of the second pair (which twist the threads) reciprocating at the same stroke as or at smaller stroke than the rollers of the first pair (which twist the strands). The length of the thread path from the point of convergence of the strands at the first pair of the rollers to the second pair of rollers may differ for the two threads, while the strand (or thread) path between the rollers and the points of convergence of the strands (or threads) may differ for the strands (or threads) so that the zones of twist in the strands (or threads) are out of phase. In examples there are two wool strands in each of two threads, or the second thread comprises a synthetic yarn and the first thread two wool strands or one wool strand and one synthetic yarn. The synthetic yarns may be mono- or multi-filament yarns of nylon, polypropylene, alginate, rayon, a polyester or an acrylic. Wool strands may have been treated with colloidal silica to increase the inter-fibre friction.
