Abstract

4-Nitroimidazole derivatives of the formula wherein Hal is a chlorine, bromine or iodine atom, R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or aryl radical and A is a bivalent aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, are prepared by ether cleavage of the corresponding nitroimidazoles substituted at the 1-position by a radical of the formula -A-O-B-X where B is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical and X is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a nitro, sulphuric acid, sulphonic acid or hydroxy group. The compounds have chemotherapeutic properties. Asymmetric dihaloalkanes may be obtained as by products of the above process.
