Heading C2C. 5-Nitroimidazoles of the formula wherein R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or aryl radical, A is a bivalent aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, B is a bivalent aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radical and X is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a nitro, sulphuric acid, sulphonic acid or hydroxyl group, are obtained by condensing compounds of the formula wherein Z is a reactive ester radical, with the appropriate 4(5)-nitroimidazoles under anhydrous conditions in the presence of acid catalysts, and treating the salts so obtained with bases to obtain the free imidazoles. The compounds of the above formula have chemotherapeutic properties.
