Abstract
1,166,313. Preparation of triacetals. CHEMISCHE WERKE HœLS A.G. 13 Jan., 1967 [15 Jan., 1966], No. 1926/67. Heading C2C. Compounds of the general formula where R and R<SP>1</SP> is a hydrogen atom or an unsubstituted or substituted monovalent linear or branched alkyl, aryl, haloalkyl, alkaryl, aralkyl, alkoxyaryl, haloaryl, alkenyl or cycloalkyl radical, R<SP>1</SP> can also be a cyano, chloroalkoxyalkyl, fluoroalkoxyalkyl or cyano - alkoxyalkyl radical, h and l are zero or an integer from 1 to 8 and m is zero or an integer from 1 to 14 but not more than one of h, l and m can be zero at the same time, are prepared by heating a triol of the general formula with an aldehyde of the general formula R<SP>1</SP>CHO in the molar ratio of from 1: 1À5 to 1: 10, or with paraformaldehyde in an equivalent ratio, in the presence of an acid catalyst and with the removal of the water formed in the reaction. Suitably the reaction temperature is between 40‹ and 200‹ and the catalyst is concentrated sulphuric acid. Entrainers such as benzene to remove water and solvents such as petroleum ether or methylene chloride can be used.
