Abstract

An insulating space between the inner and outer contacts 19, 15 of a coaxial connector half is partly solid and partly gaseous, the solid part 21 comprising sections 21a . . . 21d whose thicknesses are chosen to maintain constant impedance along the length of the connector half, at least two adjacent sections having different internal or external dimensions. The insulating sections 21c, 21a engage, respectively, the inner split socket contact 19 and the outer plug contact 15, and the sections 21a ... 21d may be integral, bonded together or fitted together by engaging flanges and recesses. In another embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown), a connector half (49) similar to that described above has an external flange (56) formed on its outer contact (55) which enables it, together with its complementary connector half, to be mounted in a panel aperture. Gas enters an inlet (60) in the flange (56) to flow through the insulating spacers of the connector halves and through the inner insulation of coaxial cables (48) to which the connector halves are secured, this cable insulation being in the form of spirally-wound dielectric beads (51). In a further embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown), the solid part of the insulating space comprises sections which engage, respectively, the inner and outer contacts and which are joined by a conical section.
