Abstract

A programme control device for domestic appliances comprises a member 29 rotatable by motor 43 such that channels or blisters (33, Fig. 9, not shown) in a flexible sheet 31, carried on a rigid backing membar 30 with the interposition of porous compressible material 32, selectively interconnect ports (such as 95, 98, Fig. 7, not shown) in the reading head 21 to allow pneumatic suction to be fed to actuators (such as 83, 84, Fig. 1, not shown) operating switches (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) for control of an appliance. The member 29 can be manually set to a desired position by means of shaft 26 which is then pulled axially to close contacts 52, 53 and energize motor 43 and a vacuum pump (55, Fig. 9, not shown). Spring 63 pivots a latch 58 clockwise so that its end 57 engages groove 56 to hold the shaft 26 against return action of blade spring 48. At the end of a programme cycle the actuator 64 is connected to vacuum by member 29 and rotates latch 58 anticlockwise to release shaft 26 allowing contacts 52, 53 to open the dump valve 69 also being operated to vent chamber 70 to atmosphere and thus to interconnect certain actuators to atmosphere to ensure rapid deactuation thereof. A second embodiment (Figs. 11 to 16, not shown) has modifications which permit release of the latch member by pressing shaft 26 axially inwards at any time during a programme cycle, enable adjustment of dump valve 69, and provide positive return actuation of switch blade 48, by an additional spring (185) acting on shaft 26.
