Abstract

In a spark chamber, for determining the distribution of #-particles, X-ray or gammaray photons to obtain the image of radioactive sources, the dead-time of the chamber is. reduced by connecting a discharge device, in shunt, across the chamber. The discharge device may be either a quenched spark gap or a vacuum tube. The spark chamber, of the type described in Specification 1,089,018, comprises an anode, cathode and auxiliary electrode. In one embodiment, the spark chamber current pulse triggers the quenched spark gap through a pulse transformer. In a second embodiment, a tetrode connected across the anode-auxiliary electrode space is triggered by a voltage pulse applied to its control grid. A pulse produced in the spark chamber has a steep leading edge and the auxiliary electrode current is amplified in an avalanche-connected transistor and secondary emission amplifier before being applied to the tetrode control grid.
