Abstract
P.V.C. is cross-linked by adding a polyethylenically unsaturated ester, heating to melt the P.V.C., shaping and cooling the mixture and subjecting the mixture to 0.1-50 megarads of high energy electron radiation. Specific esters are triallyl phosphite, trimethylol propane trimethacrylate, and tri- or poly-ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate. In the examples, the melted mixture also contains dibasic lead phthalate, dibasic lead stearate, antimony oxide, clay, trioctyl trimellitate, and epoxidized soybean oil and is applied to wire and irradiated to form an insulation.
